Wisdom Teeth Extraction: Preparation and Recovery Tips

Wisdom teeth typically emerge between ages 17 and 25 and can sometimes lead to pain and complications. Here's how to prepare.

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to erupt, usually between ages 17 and 25. Because our modern jaws are smaller, they often become impacted, causing pain, swelling and damage to neighbouring teeth.

Preparation is simple. Arrange transport home, stock up on soft foods (yogurt, soup, smoothies, mashed potatoes), and stop smoking for at least 48 hours before surgery to help healing.

Recovery tips: bite gently on gauze for 30–45 minutes to control bleeding, apply cold compresses in the first 24 hours, avoid straws for 72 hours to prevent dry socket, and follow the prescribed antibiotic and pain-relief schedule.

Most patients feel much better within three to five days and can return to normal routines within a week.
